Description

I've been in possession of this image and the memories that come with it since well.. you can see the date on the photo.

When I was younger, my mother used to work for IBM as a Materials Engineer. Back then, IBM used to do these big "Family Day" gatherings so I was carted off to the IBM campus at Austin Texas (it's now a shoping center called "The Domain") and would look at all the stuff that my 7 year old brain couldn't comprehend.

At one point, I'm taken to the lab where they keep their Scanning Electron Microscope, or SEM, and my mom wanders off to talk to some people. The guy who runs the machine, sits me up at the controls and shows me how they have an ant rigged up in side and lets me play with the controls so I could zoom in and out on the ant. I seem to remember him pointing out how their was a tiny hole in the ant's head too. My mom comes back in and is horrified to see her little boy messing with such an expensive piece of equipment. But the man calms her fears, and I get this photograph from the machine. To this day, I don't know what all the numbers and letters mean at the bottom, possibly they are coordinates and/or zoom information.

The resulting picture adorned my room's bulletin board till I left for college, when I took it with me and it adorned my dorm room's bulletin board. In college I used it as the source photo for a small series of prints in my Print Making class. When I graduated, I eventauly put the photo away so that I would stop being exposed to direct sunlight. It's such an awesome photo, with so many memories in it though, that I had to share. So here you are.

The title refers to my belief that this is a fire ant, and it's usage as the source for the above mentioned print. I'll post the print soon and link it here.

Media is a photograph taken from Scanning Electron Microscope back in 1992. I don't think anyone owns this ant, at least not anymore.

If I am to hazard a guess the 0008 is the negative number, 20Kv is the voltage running through electron gun, X85 is the magnification, the 100 mu meters is the resolution, but I have no idea what the WD44 is for.

Before you ask bro I taking a class that is teaching me how to use such devices.
