One of the first logos I created for Katy ISD, this little guy is the mascot and log for Mayde Creek Elementry as of this posting.
He was created when the school requested a new logo for the creation of their new marquee sign. Before this, they had a variety of clip art gators that they used. When this logo was adapted I made sure that it was consistently applied to their stationary and other outgoing media.
I started with a several hand drawings that were then inked and live traced with in Illustrator. After cleaning them up I presented the ideas to the school and they selected two of the designs but requested revisions. After that they selected the design seen above. Original he was drawn with an open mouth, but the school thought he wasn't friendly enough like that.
After he was selected, I suggested that the school hold a contest for the students to name the new mascot. Such a contest never came to be as far as I know, but I have always referred to him as "Tater the Gator" due to his potato shaped body.
Media is live traced vector in Adobe Illustrator CS5.
Mayde Creek Elementary, and their logo, are the property of Katy ISD.
