The Little Mermaid Jr Poster (Beckendorff JH)

For the fall semester of 2013, I was presented with an interesting situation at the Print Shop. Two schools theater departments that I had been doing design work for, were doing the exact same show, at the same semester. Beck Junior High and Beckendorff Junior High had both decided on Disney's Little Mermaid Jr, knowing full well that the other intended to do the same.

For Beckendorff, I went with a darker design that focused on the the two "worlds" of the story meeting and, thus, crossing over. I felt going with a simple silhouette made for a more striking, but still visually appealing image. The bubbles flying out from the touching palms, give a feeling of motion and power, as if this if this is the point of transformation. The flower in mermaid Ariel, was added to balance out that silhouette against human Ariel's bow.

To make sure that the face and hair matched up with the expected Disney image, I cheated and traced over an image of Ariel, rather than trust my own drawing skills. I also did the same with the hand to make sure it looked and felt natural.

The logo is the one created by Disney, but since the school did not have access to a high quality vector of it, I recreated it by "tracing" over a smaller image of it. In my original sketch I had a custom logo designed for this image that revolved around water rippling away from the text, perhaps someday I'll fully render it.

Media is full vector based on a hand done sketch. The program used is Adobe Illustrator CS6.
